How to Use Seedance 2.5: A Complete Beginner Guide (2026)

Seedance 2.5 is ByteDance’s current flagship video model: 30-second native clips, up to 50 reference assets and timestamp-precise editing. This guide takes you from a blank prompt to a finished 30-second shot. For quality benchmarks first, read the Seedance 2.5 review.

Step 1: Pick your platform

Seedance 2.5 is live on Jimeng (即梦), Doubao, Coze and 小云雀 in China, Dreamina for international users, and the Volcano Engine API (launched August 7, 2026) for developers. The web apps are the fastest way to learn; the API is the right choice once you automate.

Step 2: Choose a generation mode

  • Text to video — describe the shot. Best for exploration.
  • Image to video — lock composition with a first frame, or give first and last frames for a controlled move.
  • Reference generation — attach up to 30 images, 10 videos and 10 audio clips (50 assets total) to define characters, locations, camera language and sound.

Step 3: Write the prompt

Structure it as: subject + action + camera + light + sound. Seedance 2.5 follows second-level timestamp instructions, so for anything past 15 seconds, script beats explicitly: “0-8s: wide shot, she enters the market; 8-20s: tracking shot follows her to the stall; 20-30s: close-up, she tastes and smiles.” One action per beat — stacking actions in a single beat is the most common failure mode. Full patterns in the Seedance 2.5 prompt guide.

Step 4: Set duration and generate

Pick up to 30 seconds for a single generation. Longer costs more credits, so prototype at 5-10 seconds, lock the look, then commit to the full take. If skin looks waxy (rare in 2.5, common in 2.0), regenerate — do not try to prompt your way out with texture keywords first.

Step 5: Edit instead of re-rolling

This is 2.5’s superpower. Select the clip, describe the change and the timecode: “at 12s, replace the red can with a blue bottle; at 22s, remove the person in the background.” Edits land within roughly a second of the target and the rest of the shot is untouched. Details in the video editing guide.

Step 6: Extend and export

Need more than 30 seconds? Use temporal extension: the model continues the shot while preserving character, set and camera logic, and you can extend multiple rounds. Export, then do final sound sweetening if the scene needs a music bed.

Troubleshooting

  • Character drifts across beats → add 3-5 reference images of the character from different angles.
  • Camera wanders → name exactly one camera move per beat.
  • Cut feels abrupt at an extension seam → extend from a static or slow moment, not mid-action.
